The Reward of Patience

Blog

Dear Islamic brothers! Life in this world is full of tragedies and sufferings. Each and every human being has to go through many tests and trials for one reason or other. Some trials are so heavy that many people lose their mind and go mad. As Islam is a complete code of life and guides us in each and every sphere of life it guides us at the time of adversity as well.

Islam says if one observes patience and does not show impatience, it will definitely bring the pleasure of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) along with many everlasting rewards. Let’s read the rewards and favors mentioned in the holy Quran and the blessed ahadith in this regard.

The holy Quran says, “”

These will be given their reward twice over, because they are patient, and repel evil with good, and spend out of what We have provided them.

اِنَّمَا یُوَفَّى الصّٰبِرُوْنَ اَجْرَهُمْ بِغَیْرِ حِسَابٍ(۱۰)

Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning. (39:10)

Sulayman ibn Qasim said, “the reward of every deed is known, except for the reward of patience which will be like heavy rain.”

And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayat.

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَ الصّٰبِرِیْنَ(۱۵۳)

And be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are patient.

The beloved Rasool (صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ) has stated,

“'When a child of the bondsman (of Allah) dies, Allah says to the angels: "Have you taken the fruits of his heart." They reply: "Yes." So He says: "What did My bondsman say?" They reply: "He praised you and mentioned that to You is the return." So Allah says: "Build a house in Paradise for My bonsdman, and name it 'the house of praise.'"
Another hadith says,
“When Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) wants well-being of a bondsman he inflicts the troubles upon him.”

According to some narrations every trouble a muslim faces becomes a source of reward and in many cases erases his sins as well. The beloved Rasool (صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ) stated,

“The life, property and offspring of a Muslim man and women always remain in the shade of danger until he meets Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in the state that there is no sin upon him or her.”

Dear Islamic brothers! Being a muslim as we are demanded to make sabar (patience) in the times of difficulty as the same way we have to be pleased with decree of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) as well. Wise people have said when a calamity befalls exercise patience so that you may earn the rewards in the hereafter. If you show impatience and complain unnecessarily you will not be able to remove the calamity but you will surely be deprived of the rewards in the hereafter. The holy prophet (صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ) has said “He who is not pleased with his sustenance and spreads the news of his ailment and does not observe patience, none of his actions will be raised to the courts of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and he will see Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) while He (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is displeased with him.”

At the end, there is a glad tiding for those muslims who are poor and unable to fulfill their desires. Nevertheless they are pleased with the divine scheme and always exercise patience.

Imam Qushairi discussing the matter of sabar in his treatise on tasawwuf risala qushairiya mentions, “the patient poor will be in the court of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) on the day of judgement”

Dear Islamic brothers! There is a great wisdom behind the trials and tests we go through. All the calamities we face and the troubles which come on our way are character builders which make us stronger than before. After we go through the trials and show patience, Tolerance and self-control become part and parcel of our personality and uplift us to the heights of moral values which we, otherwise, would never have been able to reach.

May Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) grant us the true understanding of Islamic teachings and enable us to remain steadfast on iman at the time of calamity. May we always turn to him in difficult times. Ameen.
